What To Know When You Start Collecting

Does the idea of collecting something intrigue you? When you are in a store, are you drawn to the various curios that line the shelves and catch a person’s eyes as they pass. Well, it sounds like you want to start collecting, but don’t know how or where to start. Collecting Frogs – a Fun Hobby for All Ages was an article that got me started in collecting but what you collect is up to you, and what follow are some tips that every new collector should know or follow.
Collect with your heart, but be smart. Do your homework about the items you are going to collect. Collecting should be about the person who it is for. Remember it is not easy to make a fortune by collecting stuff. Choosing this as a hobby is not about the items that someone picks out, it is about putting their heart into building the best collection that they can. Not every collectible requires a large investment from the person, there are many things that can be had that are not very pricey.

Figure out what interest you. A person can make a collection out of most things. In the end the important part of a collection is the stories that accompany them. The right collectibles are different for everyone. The items you choose are not about how much they cost and they can be as inexpensive as you want.

There are two ways to buy, either locally or online at websites like www.myfrogcollection.com, and although it is easy to jump in and start buying at an auction site online, but first check the stuff out locally and in person so you can learn about the feel and look of an item in person first. Check out the local craft fairs that are organized in your area. Learn more about the characteristics of a piece and problems to look for that might not be evident when purchasing online. Make sure you take into account everything that goes into the cost of a curio before you decide where you can get the best value from. When you learn more about the prices of items, you’ll know when something is truly a bargain on online.

Find a book about the collectibles you seek. They may not always have a price that is current or completely accurate, but they can provide a wealth of other information in addition to the price you should pay. A good book should show marks, correct sizes and at least some history.

Keep notes on what you paid for future reference. There are many other benefits to writing down what is in your collection. Do it on the computer or just buy a notebook. A person can include lots of information including how much something cost, how you got it, and a short description.

The most fun in collecting is finding like minded folks to share your finds, trade with and learn more about your collections although for me it wasn’t easy to find people who were interested in collectible frogs you can find them by looking for an online collectors club or online forums where these collectors gather.

For me I get tremendous enjoyment when someone else gets to see what I have put together. I also enjoy researching the background of the more unusual pieces, looking for old patents of when an item might be made or the history of a now defunct company.

Every now and then I find my collection growing too large and have to find a way to eliminate a few items and do this by either selling them or giving them away. I know that not every one will enjoy them in the way that I do. Even though they may not love it like I do, I still let them know the memories associated with the collectible. But I always hope that they will love it in the way that I do.
