The Computerized Sewing Machine
Should you be buying a computerized sewing machine?
So many people who want to start sewing want to purchase a sewing machine. You want to have a good sewing experience so it is very important that you choose the correct type. There are four basic types, thus let us have a look at what your options are.
The Electronic Sewing Machine
This would be a very basic machine, however that doesn’t mean this machine is worthless, in fact they are great. They do a great job and are driven by an electric motor. The dog feeder, bobbin and needle are driven by the motor. The speed is controlled by a foot pedal, the more you press down on the pedal the faster your motor will drive the needle, bobbin and dog feeder.
This is a safe bet and will do all the basic sewing you would require. If you decide that this is the machine for you then just have a look at the various types you can purchase and have a look at the different features, then you can decide what will work best for you. If you do basic sewing such as clothing etc this would not be a bad investment.
Computerized Sewing Machines
This is basically like the electronic model, however more apt technology has been incorporated. Usually they have a lot more stitches you can choose from. Indeed they are computerized; they come with screens which show you the stitch selection, width, length etc. The tension, length and width are pre programmed.
Please do not let the name computerized scare you, because they are very easy to operate. Again you will have to look at the different models, with some that are very basic to some that are more advanced. You get very expensive machines, so decide what you want to do with this machine and then make a decision.
Overlocker Machines
This machine is certainly not a necessity but a great one to have. These machines are used to prevent fraying and give a professional finish to the seams of a garment. You can do that on the electric and computerized models as well, however there the zigzag function will have to be used.
You cannot only have an overlocker, because you still need to do the basic sewing with a sewing machine. Thus again if you can afford it then it certainly is nice to have, but if you are a beginner then buy a normal sewing machine and if you advance and you feel you want one then go for it. Perhaps if you do sewing for a business it would be advisable to get an overlocker to add that professional touch.
Manual Sewing Machines
Just because they are operated by turning a handle doesn’t mean that they don’t work well. This machine does not work with electricity. What you have to do is turn a handle which powers the machine. They are of good quality and can perform very well. Back in the day we used these machines in school, but now they aren’t readily available, except perhaps an antique store. Time has given us new models which are much easier to operate.
Choosing a new sewing machine is very exciting and the options are endless. Currently most buyers go for a computerized sewing machine, because it has everything you could possibly want and technology makes sewing a breeze.
