Tabletop wargames are a fairly popular hobby for countless individuals. Their beginning comes all the way back from the 1800’s where similar boards were created to recreate battles for strategic training. The game of Kriegspiel was invented in 1811 and has plenty of similarities to today’s versions of wargames. Nowadays we see successful brands like Warhammer, which is a game using miniature soldiers that are built up and painted in many different ways. The players then battle their armies against each other using dice and strategy. One well known chain of stores that sell these models is the Games Workshop and we are going to be reviewing what it is like taking on one of the Career Choices available in the stores.

There are numerous Careers obtainable within the Games Workshop, it’s not all focussed in the stores. For instance there are New Careers to be found in miniatures design or working on the website team. These Careers present some exciting opportunities to get involved in the game on a whole new level. There are indeed some reasonably high level qualifications needed for things like this though, so the key thing we are going to be reviewing is trying New Careers within the retail stores. Yes these roles are perhaps the lowest starting point in what Games Workshop has to give, but they may also be some of the most fun you’ll ever have in a job.

The core responsibilities of these positions are of course to look after the shop and sell the merchandise to customers, just similar any other retailer. The major difference here though, is that you are working in a store surrounded by one of your hobbies, and it doesn’t end there. In store there are often gaming sessions happening all day, events for newcomers and much more. As an employee of the store you can join in on this action, taking part and supervising everything to keep it organised. If you ever drop by a Games Workshop store you’ll realise precisely what I mean, the moment you go through the door you’ll be greeted and introduced. You’ll be asked if you’re comfortable with the game and if not, the staff have no problem in taking 15 minutes to show you the core mechanics of the game. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the employees spent more time playing games and supervising events than they do behind the counter.

Getting these Careers isn’t especially difficult as you can probably imagine, after all it is a retail store and good grades in GCSE English and Maths will be enough. The main thing the employer will search for is certainly a genuine love for the game and a friendly and confident character, so if you’re searching for New Careers and have a strong interest in the Warhammer games then you can’t really go wrong with this. Sure there may not be many chances for development in the store, you’d only really be aiming to progressing into a manager’s position, but it’s not the promotions that you’d go there for. You’d be applying for these Career Choices because you’d be in a friendly, upbeat environment, working with a product that you love and can enjoy every day.
