There are, of course, those standard articles of clothing we all purchase – pants, jackets, shirts, socks, and so on. Then sometimes we see those out-of-the-ordinary garments that you simply won’t find in the average retail clothing store. That is certainly the case with the circle of women who don their classic red hats.

Red hat appliqués are a great way to personalize and customize your red hat. If you’re a member of the Red Hat Society, then you already know the importance of releasing yourself from the confines of what matches and what doesn’t. Why not take it one step further and decorate your red hat to reflect your own personal style?

For a list of items and decoration ideas that will help you customize your red hat, keep reading.

Stick a Feather In Your Hat

No red hat is complete without at least one beautiful feather. Jazz up your look with a gorgeous peacock feather or play it down with a dashing red cardinal feather.

To attach feathers to your red hat, you can either glue them to the hat or actually sew them on, essentially sewing around the quill of the feather tightly to attach it securely.

Button It Up

Dig deep into your sewing box and you’ll likely find thousands of mismatched and lost buttons that are looking for a home. There’s that jeweled button from your favorite blouse or maybe the top button from your wedding dress – so, why not take those memories and add them as your new red hat appliqués? Simply sew each button on in a ring shape or any wild pattern that you like.

Trinkets and Baubles

A shiny bead, an old necklace, a pendant without a chain – these are all stunning items that you can use to add some sparkle to your red hat. The flashier, the better. So, dig around in those kitchen drawers, empty your jewel box and find your inspiration.

Go Full Bloom

Whether you choose real blooms or silk flowers, they’ll brighten your day and your hat. When using real blooms, you can use florist’s tape, glue or even a pin to hold the flowers in place.

Silk flowers, though not as fragrant, are a great substitute that will never wilt. You can attach them by sewing them in place or gluing them on. And remember, opt for something big, bold and positively stunning.

Tie A Ribbon ‘Round The Old Red Hat

The red hat with the purple ribbon is quintessential, an invocation of the Red Hat Society logo and image. So, for your red hat adornment and decoration, you can go as simple as a flat, purple ribbon – just make sure it’s satin.

Remember, red hat appliqués are about expressing yourself and letting go. So, don’t be afraid to adorn your hat and yourself with all the things you find beautiful (ribbon, flowers, beads, buttons or feathers), even if they don’t match at all.
