Architecture shapes the world as we see it

The most important part of my life are my Drafting Tables and my Drafting Chairs. They are my life and my love. I have recently started my own architectural firm and although business hasn’t been as good because of the curb in construction, I still have a lot of fun. I draw anything from skyscrapers to bridges. My passion is definitely skyscrapers. Seeing a building that I designed is an amazing feeling. It is weird to see your work, something you’ve designed, shape society.

When I was a kid in Cincinnati there was an interesting mixture of some modern and some older style buildings. Ever since I was a kid I sketched floor plans and building designs on pieces of scrap paper. My drawings weren’t master pieces I admit but I was only in elementary school. However, it did show my interest in buildings and drawing. I spent my day’s day dreaming of building different kinds of buildings. I had notebooks full of these drawings; I often got in trouble for not listening to the teacher. However, I didn’t care. I just wanted to keep drawing. My mom for a while was very worried about me, but she learned to accept the fact that school bored me.

High school was amazing; I could take the classes I wanted to. All of my electives were either art classes or computer generated design classes. I still kept a notebook full of my designs. Some of them were actually good. My art teacher Mr. Brown really encouraged me to pursue architecture. He was a huge inspiration to me. The architecture class I took was really interesting. We used this software called Chief Architecture Designer or CAD. This software allowed me to show my ideas a lot better than my drawings. It was in high school I fell in love with the vastness of the skyscraper. Dubai especially attracted me.

Dubai, an oasis of civilization in the Middle East, is home to the largest skyscraper in the world. Its skyline is breath-taking, it was my dream to work and design a skyscraper there. When I was in high school they finished the largest skyscraper and planned another world breaking skyscraper. It would stand over a kilometer in the air. These feats of architecture and engineering amazed me.

After High school I went to school at the University of Cincinnati. The architecture program, DAAP, is one of the most prestigious in the country. I spent many hours in the drafting room. The drafting tables there were very user-friendly, they even had drafting chairs. The time I spent in there with my friends from class was great. We were usually helping one another with projects and floor plans. We drew just about everything. The summer after my junior year I got an amazing internship at an architectural firm in New York City. At the end of the summer they offered me a permanent job once I graduated. I had to take it, it was my dream job.

After a while though I decided to start my own firm, with only myself, my drafting table, my drafting chair, and my ideas I set off to make a multi-million dollar business. Hopefully one day I’ll be rich.
