As the region’s oldest and largest art museum, the San Diego Museum of Art’s renowned holdings include a fine selection of European old masters, 19th and 20th century American art, an encyclopedic Asian collection, and growing collections of contemporary and Latin American art. With fine art from all over the world, the San Diego Museum of Art is a learning experience for the young and the old alike.

When you visit San Diego museum of art, there are four primary categories of art. There is American Art, European Art, Asian Art and Contemporary Art. These pieces of art can take a wide variety of forms, including sculptures and glass work. The permanent collection at the museum also includes Mexican and South American art.

In addition, the museum presents major art exhibitions from around the world, as well as an extensive schedule of supporting cultural and educational programs. These exhibitions are only in San Diego for a short period of time. If you are interested in seeing them, you will need to plan your visit for the times that the exhibits are open to the public. Some of the exhibits charge extra fees to support the museum that the exhibit originated from.

When you visit the San Diego museum of contemporary art, it is important that caution must be had with any photography that you may do on museum grounds. Artwork can be damaged through use of flash photography. This can result in the loss of a priceless display, or the need to do significant restorative work on the objects. Because of this, special lighting is used in museums to preserve the artwork. Breaking the rules in regards to cameras can result in the confiscation of the camera or ejection from the museum.

No gift is too small to support the museum in continuing to prosper and enlighten. Donations made to the Museum allow for the presentation of exhibitions, outreach programs to the community, research, publications, and conservation of works of art. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the San Diego Museum of Art, you should contact the museum about their requirements for volunteers.

The San Diego Museum of Art is open seven days a week with hours varying dependent on the time of year. The museum is located near Balboa Park in San Diego and can be accessed from Interstates 5 and 8.

An event at the San Diego museums is not only a memorable experience, but also helps the Museum continue its mission of enriching lives through art.
